Musing Mondays #1

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week...
  • Describe one of your reading habits.
  • Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you choose that/those book(s).
  • What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
  • Tell us what you're reading right now – what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren't) enjoying.
  • Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
  • Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books – let's hear it, then!

For my first Musing Monday I have decided to talk about one of my reading habits. It's a little strange but here goes. Whenever I read a book I like to put myself in there like I'm one of the characters. I have no idea why but I think it helps me concentrate on the action more if I think of it happening to me. Action/mystery/suspense novels can get a bit scary. Romance novels are fun [I've kissed a lot of vampires and werewolves in paranormal books ;) ] because I can imagine myself falling in love with all of those gorgeous men that I will never actually meet. I guess that is why I love this picture so much...

Musing Mondays is a weekly event hosted by Should Be Reading

Tell me what you think of my weird habit and if you have any of your own.

Thank You So Much

Vigilante Nights Review & Giveaway

Title: Vigilante Nights

Author: Erin Richards

Genre: YA

Published: July 18, 2013

Publisher: Merit Press

Length: 306 pages

Format: hardcover, ebook (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Sony Reader Store)

Brief Summary: Lucas will do anything to avenge his sister's death due to a gang initiation and teenage stupidity. He organizes a group of fellow loners to seek out those responsible and make them pay.

Blurb: A "good boy" will do anything for vengence when a gang rite kills his twin sister. Will Lucas win, or follow his sister Silver into the blackness? After a hideous car wreck, Lucas wakes from a coma to find that his world is gutted. Not only is his beloved twin sister, Silver, gone forever, but Lucas is broken in body and spirit. He will never be a college athlete, and is robbed of what he know realizes was the most important bond of his life. Although they weren't identical twins, Lucas and Silver shared a bond so fierce it defied reason, and was nearly supernatural. After her death, that bond seems to endure when Lucas sees Silver everywhere he turns. Either he's crazy, or Silver is trying to tell him something about the California gang initiation they stumbled into that cost Silver her life. Lucas is bent on revenge, turning on Raymond, Silver's former boyfriend; the one Lucas never wanted her to date. He forms a posse of vigilantes to take out the gangsters responsible for Silver's death, but he risks not only his own life, but the love of the new girl on the block, who knows more about Lucas and Silver than can be accounted for by mere chance.

Review: Vigilante Nights is filled with characters who are so well fleshed out and engaging that I began to care about each of them. The opening scenes with Lucas and Silver are so special that I really felt the bond and friendship between them. I also felt Lucas' pain when he woke up to find that Silver was gone. I was empathetic because I felt a similar feeling of "what if" and guilt when my sister was killed. Lucas' friends are great and so supportive of him. They are there for him after Silver dies and despite the initial awkwardness, they behave like normal joking, pranking teenage boys. I have not read many books with a male narrator and this one is fantastic. I like the insight into the male mind.
Tara as a love interest for Lucas irritated me at some points only because she continues to hang around with Raymond even after Lucas warns her away. Although the reasons for her behavior are revealed later it still bothered me because I became attached to Lucas and did not want anything to hurt him. Silver's presence is up lifting. She is a breath of fresh air in stressful situations. Silver also comes to the rescue several times. I loved the concept of the gang of loners seeking vengeance. They prove that you can fight back against seemingly impossible odds.

Favorite Quotes
"Open your peepers. You're still kicking it."Air stirred my bangs against my forehead. "You didn't think I'd let you upstage my death, did you?"

~and~

"Silver Ghost needs girl power." "And a brain."

Overall: I loved Vigilante Nights. It is a really great novel about vengeance. The characters, plot, narrator, and setting are all perfect and I definitely think Erin Richards did an amazing job. I give Vigilante Nights 5 stakes and I will be reading this again soon.

About the Author: Erin writes SF&F romance and young adult fiction. Her YA debut novel, Vigilante Nights, releases from Merit Press (F+W Media) on July 18, 2013. Erin has also published two adult romance novels, Casting Shadows, a romantic suspense (Eppie award finalist), now available in print for the first time (July 2012); and Wicked Paradise, a fantasy romance, was released by Crimson Romance (F+W Media) in August 2012, available in ebook and print format. Feature & Follow 7/26 (I am a Feature!)

Feature & Follow Friday is hosted by: Alison Can Read and Parajunkee

This weeks question: What do you do with your books after you are done reading them?

Usually after I finish my books I organize them by author if I already have books by that author or how soon I know I will read it again (it's a little weird). On my Kindle I usually try to keep a really good book on the first few pages.

Also this week I am one of the Features along with Paradays

The Mating Call Review

Title: The Mating Call

Author: Marie H. Stephens

Series: Paranormal Alliance Series (Volume 1)

Genre: paranormal, urban fantasy, romance

Published: April 15, 2013

Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

Length: 188 pages

Format: paperback, ebook (Amazon, B&N, Kobo, and Sony ebooks)
_______________________________________________

Brief Summary: Samantha escapes the city to the mountains of North Carolina. There she meets the alpha of the McClure pack, Lucian. Together they must figure out who is stalking Samantha and why.

Review: To be perfectly honest, I did not like The Mating Call all that much. Suspending the belief that there are werewolves, this novel isn't all that believable. It seems unrealistic to me that anyone could go from the disbelief and hysteria of being told they are a werewolf to jumping into bed with a man she just met in less than 10 pages, but this is exactly what Samantha does. I have absolutely no problem with erotic romances but this novel had no romance. There is no build up to the sex and the hero and heroine barely know each other. Also the writing style of The Mating Call is a little strange. It is in a weird present tense narration. For example, "She has become a new writer for a publishing company in Seattle."

Overall: The Mating Call is a quick read and not the worst I have read. I think the characters could have been developed a lot more and the plot more fleshed out. This novel is only 188 pages but about another 100 could be added to make this a much more enjoyable read. I am giving The Mating Call 2 stakes.

About the Author (from Goodreads.com): Marie Stephens writes urban fantasy books. She is a Registered Respiratory Therapist by day and a writer by night. She has found her passion for writing and it takes the forefront in her life. She has created characters that anyone can relate with. She wants people to see what she sees in each of her characters. She just hopes that they bring you as much joy as they have brought her.

Hers to Command Review

Title: Hers to Command

Author: Patricia A. Knight

Series: Verdantia Series #1

Genre: scifi, fantasy, romance, erotica

Published: June 2, 2013

Publisher: Troll River Publications

Length: 346 pages

Format: paperback, ebook (Amazon, Kobo)

________________________________________________

Brief Summary: Ari deTano has always known that he was expected to marry Princess Fleur Constante, but since the marriage contract he has stayed away from her. While inexperienced, Fleur is willing to risk everything to take part in the Great Rite, sexual practices that generate energy to benefit the planet, in order to save their planet, Verdantia. The Great Rite has always only needed two people but Ari and Fleur discover that they are part of a very rare occurrence, in order to perform the Great Rite they require a third person. That person is Visconte Doral deLorion, Ari's aide de camp, and the man that he has been lusting after for years. \
*This is an erotic novel that contains MF, MM, MMF, and MFM scenes.*

Review: I read this series out of order, reading the second before the first. However, coming back to this one, I loved it as much as the second one. The characters are engaging and lovable. Fleur is so head strong and independent that she is comfortable going up against the domineering, protective Ari. I love her as the heroine in this novel. And not only can she take on Ari but she is more than capable of handling Doral as well as Ari. Doral is a fabulous addition to Ari and Fleur's relationship. He is a quiet protector/assassin whose main concern is the pleasure of the ones he loves. Doral is also badly damaged from his time spent in slavery. Fleur and Ari show their own protective and vengeful sides when they decide to see to the person who caused their loved one pain.
Hers to Command and the Verdantia series has quickly become additions to my top ten of this year. I love romance and those usually fall into erotic romances. However, unfortunately they usually are all sex and no actual plot. Hers to Command balances the amazingly hot sex with a great plot. The mystery of the invading, off-world species and the person who is betraying the citizens are well developed. This novel is amazing, fleshed out with ridiculously sexy guys, a powerful aphrodisiac, mysterious and strong plot, and a trio that you cannot help but fall in love with.

Overall: This novel is one of the best I have read this year. Ari, Fleur, and Doral have a bond and type of chemistry that is unmatched. I recommend this one to anyone who doesn't mind taking a walk on the wild side with their romance novels. I excitedly give Hers to Command 5 stakes and cannot wait until the third one in this series.

About the Author: Patricia A. Knight is the pen name for an eternal romantic who lives in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by her horses, dogs, and the best man on the face of the earth – oh yeah, and the most enormous bullfrogs you will ever see. Word to the wise: don't swim in the pool after dark.

______________________________________________

Brief Summary: Mermaids Sirena, known as Vanessa on land, and her adult daughters travel ashore to gather information on what we humans know about the changing of the oceans. Vanessa captures the attention of a deckhand named Joe who is similarly affected. Vanessa must figure out a way to continue on with the purpose of her mission while battling her attraction to Joe...and keep it from her daughters, Maria and Belinda.

Review: When I began Ocean's Gift I didn't know what to expect. I haven't really read anything about mermaids before, but I was blown away by Vanessa, Maria, and Belinda. Majority of the novel is narrated in alternating first person POV of Belinda and Joe. As a love interest for Vanessa I think that Joe is great. He listens to her and respects her enough to keep his naughty thoughts to himself, although he does use his electrician knowledge to his advantage. And I loved the way Vanessa reciprocates as an independent and head-strong woman. I became fascinated with the mermaids and their culture. Belinda and Maria do not understand why Vanessa would willingly give her body to Joe when mermaids only consider it their duty to mate with humans.
The daughters wish to go back home quickly although they do enjoy some of the human food and alcohol. Joe is amusing and his altercations with the mermaids are great. I think the purpose of the mermaids mission to land is a great one. They come to see about the harm and changes that are happening to the oceans that will one day affect us all tremendously. This is a very real message for today's world. The story of Ocean's Gift is amazing and the romantic scenes are sweet while being steamy at the same time. I wanted to cry at the end and am so happy that there is a continuation because I would have been devastated if it ended there. I loved Ocean's Gift and I think a lot of other people will too.

Overall: Ocean's Gift is a great novel because of its characters, plot, and message. The necessity of preserving oceans is an important message that needs to be heard so that there is a brighter future for everyone – humans and mermaids. Ocean's Gift is getting a well deserved 5 stakes from me and I can't wait to read Ocean's Infiltrator.

About Author (from Amazon): Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkeling trip she found that she was afraid of fish. She has since sum with sea lions, sharks, and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven meter cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below. Sensationalist spin?-No Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks, and all. Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world. The Ocean's Gift Series is her first foray into fiction. She'll follow this up with the first book of her suspense thriller Nightmares series, Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer, to be released in July 2013. Author's website

Review of Patricia Knight's Hers to Choose

Title: Hers to Choose

Author: Patricia Knight

Genre: romance, scifi, fantasy, erotica

Publisher: Troll River Publications

Length: unknown

Format: paperback, ebook (Amazon, Kobo)
______________________________________________________

Brief Summary: Flight Leader/Lady Sophillia DeLorion is asked by her brother, Doral to join with Commander Eric DeStroia in special, sexual rites called Greater and Lesser Rites that benefit their planet. However an off-world group called the Haarbs plot to recapture Sophi and inflict unimaginable torture all for a powerful aphrodisiac.

Review: I am so incredibly excited and grateful that I received this novel as an ARC because it is one of my favorites this year. Sophi is perhaps one of my favorite heroines of all time. She is so strong and independent and I admire her for making it through the nightmare that she faced with the Haarbs. Eric is a perfect mate for Sophi in that he is powerful. He is able to guide his rides and Sophi and her flights while allowing her the independence she requires to feel safe and like herself. The cameo from Doral, Ari, and Fleur is so sweet and sexy that I cannot wait to read Hers to Command. They also appear in the final battle scene.
Unfortunately I did not read Hers to Command before this novel so I was amazed with how the even the lesser rites can energize the planet and help its people. I was also horrified with the ruthlessness of the Haarbs and seriously creeped out with their methods of torture. I wanted to cry along with Sophi so many times throughout this novel, from her friends being taken to remembering her capture to waiting on the sidelines of battle for Doral and Eric's return. I absolutely loved Hers to Choose. I would and will recommend it to anyone and I will soon be going back to read Hers to Command.

Overall: This novel is one of my favorites this year. The chemistry between Sophi and Eric is so great my Kindle almost caught fire! Patricia Knight has become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to any more books that she will write. I excitedly give Hers to Choose a 5 out of 5 stars

Review of Anne Marsh's Reburn

Title: Reburn
Author: Anne Marsh
Series: The Hotshots
Genre: action, romance,
Publish Date: July 18, 2013
Publisher: eKensington (Kensington Books)
Length: 29,000 words, approx. 87 pages
Format: ebook (Amazon, Barnes and Noble)

Brief Summary: Ex-lovers Sam Clayton and Olivia Albert never expected to see each other again, especially not in the middle of a forest in the midst of a dangerous forest fire. A fire that also hides a terrorist being tracked by the FBI.

Review: Reburn surprised me because I did not know what to expect. I knew that Olivia and Sam would run into each other but I could not understand how they would reconnect while simultaneously tracking a terrorist and battling a forest fire. However, Anne Marsh has it all figured out. I loved Reburn and Sam and Olivia. The characterization of Sam seems so appropriate as he is physical outstanding, but also smart and protective of Olivia. Probably my favorite line from him is, "Fishing this agent out of the woods was going to be even more challenging than he'd anticipated." Similarly, Olivia is strong and completely competent in doing her job on her own. I think their reunion and reconnection is great with a realism and believability that not all romance books have. Reburn is definitely a book that everyone who loves romance, action, and fire fighting/rangers/FBI.

Overall: I really enjoyed Reburn. I have read a book about forest fires and I love the setting. I think it has something to do with the mental image of fire fighters and forest rangers put together ;) Anyway...the relationship between the hero and heroine is phenomenal. Sam is protective of Olivia while still allowing her to be the strong, independent FBI agent that she is. I give Reburn an impressed 4.5 out of 5 stars.

About the Author (from Amazon): After ten years of graduate school and too many degrees, Anne Marsh escaped to become a technical writer. When not planted firmly in front of the laptop translating Engineer into English, Anne enjoys gardening, running (even if it's just to the 7-11 for slurpees), and reading books curled up with her kids. The best part of writing romance, however, is finally being able answer the question: "So what do you do with a PhD in Slavic Languages and Literature?" She lives in North Carolina with her husband, two kids, and four cats. Visit her website

Review of Claire Riley's Limerence

Title: Limerence

Author: Claire Riley

Published: March 18, 2013

Publisher: Breakwater Harbor Book

Genre: paranormal, romance, horror

Length: 288 pages

Description (from Amazon): One man's obsession is so deadly it could destroy them all. Despite her love for her fiancé, Mia Lawrence finds herself inexplicably drawn to Mr. Breckt - mysterious new owner of the Island. Her thoughts are constantly consumed with the handsome and powerful stranger. However, there is much more to him than she realizes, something dangerous and supernatural. Mr. Breckt is used to getting what he wants, and now he wants Mia, at any cost. With his obsession spiraling out of control, he knows that time is running out. A war is coming. Blood will be shed, and lives will be lost, but he will have to rid himself of his obsession of Mia before it's too late. Mia and Oliver must now fight the very evil that threatens to come between them. If either of them fails, it will be more than their love for each other that will be lost. Ultimately, all three will have to make a sacrifice that will change each other's destiny forever. But will it be the right one?

Brief Summary: Mia loves her fiancĂ© Oliver however she becomes inexplicably attracted to Mr. Breckt. As Mr. Breckt becomes more and more obsessed with Mia, similarly she cannot keep her thoughts off of him. Mia and Oliver must fight for their love because something bigger than either of them realizes is on the horizon.

Review: I started reading the first chapter of Limerence on the author's website and fell in love. Once the chapter ended I was desperate to read the rest because I needed to know how Mia and Oliver's story ends. I love Mia and Oliver's relationship for the simple fact that despite being placed in a paranormal romance novel, it is one of the most realistic relationships I have read about. They have their ups and downs like real people. Oliver's jealousy and possessiveness is endearing. Mr. Breckt is the perfect villain in my opinion. He is dark, creepy, and oh so twisted. He constantly made me think that something might not be quite right with him. Also his Pawns, or minions, are seriously creepy. I enjoyed this novel because of the vampire aspects and the romance. Mr. Breckt's growing obsession drives the novel and I think Mia is a character that it is easy to imagine yourself in.

Overall: Reading Limerence I wanted Mia to just run away and never return. I think this book is great and I cannot wait for Odium. I give Limerence a 4 out of 5 stars.

Get to Know the Author (from Amazon): Claire C Riley, is a mother first, a wife second, but a writer at heart. Claire likes to break boundaries with her writing, incorporating an old school style of horror and romance. Sexy and dark. (Think Bram Stoker's Dracula, but for the 21st century!) Claire is a mother to three amazing little girls who hold her heart. She hopes to make them proud, and show them that if you work hard and believe in yourself...then, as Cinderella once said...dreams really do come true. She is an avid book collector and has a great zombie apocalypse plan in place thanks to a questionnaire she asked her readers to fill in for a post on her blog! Claire is currently working on the sequel to Limerence and also a post-apocalyptic dystopian zombie novel called - Odium. She actively encouragers reader participation on her blog, author Facebook page, and website. So get in touch! On Her Website and on Facebook
